Sanjana Karim, MD

I am a dedicated and compassionate dual board-certified psychiatrist, with an individualized and holistic approach to care.

Sanjana Karim, MD

Following a thorough evaluation, in which I strive to understand the full emotional landscape of your life, I integrate various treatment modalities as needed. While I incorporate medications when clinically necessarily, my primary treatment modality is psychotherapy. My approach is to work with you in treatment to get beyond symptoms, and to delve deeper into the root causes of your struggles, conflicts and self-defeating patterns of behavior for lasting changes. My areas of interest include working with people struggling with cross-cultural issues, or feeling “stuck” or out of place in their lives. I enjoy helping people who want to work actively to improve their emotional intelligence, with goals of being emotionally and cognitively flexible, which are keys to success in any aspect of life. I work collaboratively alongside my patients, and am dedicated to helping them achieve a sense of improved self-awareness, well-being, and empowerment.

I received my medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where I received the Francis Clark Award in Psychiatry. I completed my residency and a resident fellowship in health policy at the George Washington University Hospital, where I had a large emphasis on therapy training, with focus on psychodynamic psychotherapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy. I am also trained and experienced in mindfulness-based therapies. I am board-certified in Adult Psychiatry as well as Addiction Medicine, and have over a decade of experience working in my field. I have published and taught students and residents extensively on the following areas of interest: telepsychiatry, treatment of depression, anxiety and psychological trauma in the primary care setting, taking a holistic and integrative approach to symptoms of psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and the neurological basis of addiction and addictive behaviors. I have diverse experience working in different settings, including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment facilities, as well as the nonprofit sector.
