Cornell Wells Jr., MD

My board certification is in adult psychiatry and I have experience in treating mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, occupational stress/ adjustment issues, personality disorders, LGBT mental health, and psychotic disorders. Relationships with my patients are generally collaborative and I strive to have a non-judgmental, client-centered stance. I also have interests in using meditation and mindfulness techniques for self-healing and awareness. Having a healthy work-life balance is paramount. I achieve this by running, meditation, enjoying arts/music and travel. We are all on borrowed time, so it is important to be 'present in the moment' and to live fully, remembering to anchor ourselves using the breath as a guide to what’s going on inside our minds and bodies, which also allows us to be present for others.

I grew up in Washington, DC and moved to San Francisco for undergraduate and post-bac studies in Physiology at San Francisco State University. What attracted me most to California is its serene beauty, moderate climate, as well as the vast array of culture, diversity, and it’s relatively progressive politics. I pursued medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York and completed my psychiatry residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. I spent the last 6 months of residency pursuing a cultural psychiatry elective rotation in Auckland, New Zealand, where I worked in a specialized clinic that served the indigenous Maori population and also gained some experience working in a women’s prison. It was there that I learned the importance of understanding each person holistically in terms of their cultural, familial, spiritual, and physical aspects, as well as how to form meaningful connections with patients through commonly shared experiences.
