About

Daniel Irby, MD

Even before my medical and psychiatric training, I was interested in helping young adults and in helping people of all ages cope with transitions and loss. I have interests in group dynamics, child and adolescent psychiatry, mindfulness and how lifestyle can support mental and physical well-being. I believe that working transparently and in partnership with clients yields the best results. I have training in psychoanalytic psychodynamic psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and regularly apply Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) principles.

I studied English Literature at Princeton University and then went on to teach high school English in Newark, NJ. After moving to San Francisco, I worked for four years as a volunteer at the Zen Hospice Project. I completed medical school at the UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco Joint Medical Program (JMP), where I earned my MS and then MD. Presently I am a fourth-year adult psychiatry resident at San Mateo County and am applying for a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I participate in regular seminars and case conferences at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis.
