Debra Bergman, LMFT

Therapy is a process of self-discovery that often entails delving into past relationships and trauma to uncover their effect on our relationships with ourselves, our families and the outside world.

Debra Bergman, LMFT

My work with children, adolescents, individuals, couples and families is designed to restore trust, joy and zest and to develop meaningful connections and skills to thrive - mindfulness, authenticity and inner strength. As a Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapist (DDP), I work with various subsets of the family and bring an attachment focused interpersonal neurobiological approach to create a safe and supportive environment to nurture healthy individuals, couples and families in any orientation or socio-economic status.

I draw on research-based relational approaches - DDP, Attachment Focused Family Therapy, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Theraplay (tm), play therapy, mindfulness, neuroscience, trauma and attachment research- along with evidenced-based practices such as TF-CBT and EMDR. Every individual/family requires their own treatment plan customized to meet the needs and objectives of each, on the path toward wellness. My work experience with adults includes chronic illness including HIV and Cancer, grief and bereavement, divorce, infidelity, adverse childhood experiences, parenting, job loss, depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma (Big "T"s and Small "T"s), blended families, mid-life crisis, geriatric issues, empty nest, bi-polar, ADHD, LGBTQ themes and more.
As an adoptive parent and an adoption focused therapist, I bring a unique understanding of the identity/developmental issues. Each member of the adoption quadrant - adoptee, birth parent, foster and adoptive parents and biological children may experience challenges that affect our relationships within the family and the outside world.

Reviews for

Debra Bergman, LMFT

[Debra Bergman is an] active listener but also an active communicator. Her advice is proving to be invaluable. I am very comfortable with her counsel.

I could not have found a more perfect therapist if I had engineered her myself in a lab. Deb is exactly who I needed to coach me through some rough spots in my current life; she is thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive, compassionate, insightful, and incredibly supportive. She is also funny, a trait I appreciate in dealing with life’s little curveballs. I am so glad I found PCPA and the terrific care provided by Debra Bergman.
